320 miles
At 10 months old, Reign was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition that only affects one in every million boys. Reign urgently needed a bone marrow transplant to save his life.
There was only one specialist centre in the UK that could help Reign, but it was over 320 miles from his home in Wales. The only way Reign could access the bone marrow transplant that he desperately needed was by a Lucy Air Ambulance for Children transfer. Our aeroplanes could provide a quick, safe, infection-free environment for him to travel the long distance in, with space for his mum to accompany him.
We flew Reign from Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital in Cardiff to the Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH) in Newcastle to receive the life-saving transplant. Due to the severity of the situation, the transfer was time-critical and was mobilised in 24 hours. Reign went through seven days of chemotherapy before receiving four sessions of stem cell transplantation.
After an eight month stay in hospital, Reign was given the all-clear and discharged home. Reign’s Lucy AAC transfer helped save his life.
