Lucy AAC flies Emily to London to receive neonatal care closer to home

Middlesbrough > London

250 miles

First-time parents Rebecca and her husband were visiting family Middlesbrough when their daughter, Emily, was born early at 29 weeks over 250 miles from their home in London. Being born nearly three months early, Emily was placed in the neonatal intensive care unit at The James Cook University Hospital and faced a long hospital stay until she would be well enough to be discharged home.

Unfortunately, Emily’s medical team in Middlesbrough couldn’t plan for her long-term care as they knew that she would eventually be transferred out of their region of care. It was vital that Emily was transferred to a hospital closer to home in London.

Lucy Air Ambulance for Children was the only charity in the UK that was able to transfer Emily. We flew her at 14 days old in our flight-ready incubator that kept her comfortable and safe during the long journey from Middlesbrough to Whipps Cross Hospital in London.

Emily progressed quickly at the new hospital and was discharged home around her due date. Rebecca sent us this lovely photo of the moment Emily was able to go home – a big milestone for them all.

One year later, Emily made the trip from Middlesbrough to London again but this time by train and, as her mum says, ‘fortunately this time in less dramatic circumstances’. Rebecca says:

“We will always be incredibly grateful to be part of the Lucy Air Ambulance for Children family and for the support they provided us during one of the most difficult times.”
