Mum-to-be Lisa was attending her friend’s hen do in Glasgow when she gave birth to her son, Cruz, six weeks early. Cruz was placed in the neonatal intensive care unit as being so premature he needed specialised medical care. Cruz needed help breathing, feeding and would require constant monitoring.
Being from Glasgow originally, Lisa was grateful to have friends and family nearby to support her whilst Cruz was in hospital, but she was over 340 miles from her home, partner and two other children in Kettering. Cruz faced at least a six week stay in hospital – a long time for Lisa and Cruz to be away from their family – so it was essential that Cruz transferred to a hospital closer to home.
In addition, Cruz’s medical team in Glasgow were unable to plan for his long-term care as they knew that he would eventually be moved out of their region of care, so for Cruz to have the best neonatal care, he needed to be moved to a hospital in Kettering as soon as possible.
Lucy Air Ambulance for Children (Lucy AAC) was contacted to fly Cruz home. Being the only charity in the UK with a flight-ready incubator, the safest way for Cruz to be flown home was by aeroplane with Lucy AAC. Lucy AAC’s incubator provide Cruz with a mobile intensive care unit whilst he flew the 340-mile distance home from Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow to Kettering General Hospital.
Lisa’s partner and her children met her and Cruz at the new hospital in Kettering. They were so happy to finally be reunited and could see their future with Cruz much clearer. Cruz settled in to the new hospital really well, grew stronger and was discharged around the time of his due date. His family are now enjoying life as a family of five.
