200 miles
Nine week old Henry has only spent four days at home since birth. Due to his rare respiratory condition he has spent most of his life in various hospitals and at only four weeks old he had complex surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).
Although Henry will need further procedures and ongoing care at GOSH, last week they confirmed that he was well enough to be transferred back home to Leeds General Infirmary where Henry and his parents could have the support of their friends and family.
Due to his complex needs and fragile state, the 200 mile journey by road ambulance had been ruled out. However, Henry’s parents, Shevonne and Ben, were thrilled to find out Lucy Air Ambulance for Children would be able to transfer Henry by plane.
After waiting over a week for a bed in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Leeds General Infirmary, we were finally able to transfer him from Northolt to Leeds. Our plane enabled us to support Henry’s complex respiratory needs by use of a transport humidification system.
Henry settled in quickly at the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Leeds General Infirmary. Shevonne and Ben were so happy to be closer to home. Although they couldn’t wait until the day he was discharged, it was a big milestone for the family.
Henry stayed in hospital for a further year before being discharged home. Shevonne and Ben are now able to care for Henry at home with the support of local care workers. Although he has many ups and downs due to the complexity of his health, you would never know it meeting him. Henry has the biggest smile, is the bravest boy and we can’t wait to see what he achieves next!
The Waines Family have continued to support Lucy AAC since we transferred Henry. We even feature in the book, ‘Heroic Henry goes to London’, that the family created about Henry’s trip to Great Ormond Street Hospital where he gained superpowers. Proceeds from the books raised over £600 for Lucy AAC!
